Now for the pipe. This blend lacks balance and should not be smoked by a newbie wishing to try their first English tobacco. So I went ahead and ordered it. I also get some almonds, vanilla, and a bit of anise/licorice. I was always a little leary of the thought of pirates boarding my ship and plundering it - however, if they bring a Kake of this along, I will welcome them aboard! The sheer quality of the condementals and the lack of virginia is what sets this blend very far apart from many of the other popular latakia heavy favorites in the Brotherhood of Latakia Junkies. Woody sweet, unlike the charisma tic strong and musty sweetness of Cyprian. Not an overwhelming nicotine bite either, which I like since I smoke nothing outside of pipes and have a low tolerance for nicotine. A smooth, robust blend with LOTS of exceptional Latakia accompanied by Turkish and cavendish cut Burley. I'm then not particularly surprised that this cake burns nice and cool. I've never smoked a blend with this much Latakia and would not have, had it not been given to me. The tin description should scare off all but the most hardened latakiaphiles. Makes you earn it's respect. Ok here it is pirate kake by cornell and Diehl. I knew I would like this blend based on your reviews. It requires one to slow down and enjoy the ritual and preparation of a great pipe smoke. This product can expose you to tobacco smoke, which is known to the State of California to cause . Usually I do not think I would like such a heavy latakia blend but this is good. Might be a great smoke after a meal when you are rushed for time and have a small bowl pipe handy. Enjoy! I tried this blend which came recommended by my tobacconist, knowing that Old Ironsides is discontinued, and soon will be impossible to aquire. It has quite a Latakia kick (about 75 percent Latakia.) maiden voyage on Pirate Kake. I definately recommend Pirate Cake, although my experience is limited with this blend. For anybody who hasn't tried combining a strong Latakia blend with a nice raw carrot, I highly recommend. Very creamy, smooth in the mouth and leaves a nice coating for you to enjoy for an hour. Slightly sweet, smokey, a bit of complexity from the orientals, very little bite. Bomb". Smooth and creamy may seem incompatible with aformentiond sensations, but somehow it isn?t with Pirate Kake. Actually Latakia on its own is quite cool and smooth; however, monochromatic. The smokiness of the Latakia is perfectly balanced with the nuttiness of the burley and just a little tickle of the spice of oriental. I bought this because I found a 6 year old tin at a local B&M. Put your big boy pants on for this one. update December 2014** same batch as previous yet the past months of ageing seem to have mellowed out the baccy. I bought a 1/2 lb of this product mail-order w/o first tasting it, based on its description and its reputation in latakia-addict circles. Really enjoy it anytime of day mostly in the morning with a cup of coffee. This is a smooth, robust tobacco, with awesome smokey , and nutty, and woody tastes. This was the 1st time I understood "creamy" as a description for smoking. I don't like the cut of this tobacco ( Krumble kake, broken rubbed out flake). I hope I never take this masterful Blend for granted. Its just good, kick your taste buds in the butt good, but its good. This is a rare case of too much of a good thing. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely one to smoke when no one else is around. Breaking off a chunk and rubbing it out with your fingers isn't difficult at all, but you might want to wash your hands afterwards. I can't get it to bite, and the presentation (though messy to prepare), is outstanding. C&D managed to hit a very nice flavor note! Been a fan of this stuff for years was the other tin I picked up and opened for the road (Rattray old gowrie was the other). Performance: A very cool burning blend. The crumble is easy to break, easy to pack, easy to keep it lit, smokes really cool, full taste from the very beggining till the end. The moisture is perfect, you can put it directly in the bowl or can leave it to dry as long as you wish. I also pickup some oriental mustiness but unlike most English blends, this has zero balance the oriental is an afterthought that you pickup on the exhale but not when the smoke is in your piehole. Ten Russians is still the latakia heavy blend I reach for but this is a nice step down. Even so, I don't find the nicotine strength to be particularly remarkable. I took a long filet knife and cut it into 1/4 pound bars. I recommend a small bowl with a longish stem for best smoke. If you don't really like Latakia this will not change your mind. Now the pros: all of them. My wife, 60 feet away doing some gardening remarked how nice this smelled. Once again C&D is probably my favourite Tobacco company as the blends are spot on and the quality of tobaccos they use seem to be carefully selected and properly kept as far as humidity before blending. Sweet taste and slight reminiscence of coconut. Taste is med to full and consistent throughout. I once bought a Dolly Parton record on the same basis, so my shallowness is not new. Get some. Floral, Spicy, nutty and smooth! The latakia that Craig uses does have it's own unique taste and room note for whatever reason. I do note this is good for something different. Bottom line: If you love a big dose of Latakia, then run and get some, if you don't this one may change your mind! The block has been sitting for awhile again, as the plastic appears to have yellowed. Hadnt been a fan of too many english blends but after getting this in the mail today, i have to completely agree with these other comments. A very nice blend indeed, assuming you like Latakia of course! MY GOSH! This comes in a Krumble Kake and was fun to break and crumble to prepare for the bowl. Presentation: A hearty, dark dense block. This is a fantastic blend. Very well behaved in the pipe. The result is a kind of monochromatic, but what a great color! I love this blend. Since in bulk I broke it into three big pieces and put it in a mason jar. That being said, I wouldnt recomm end this to a Latakia newbie, I think itd be way too much. This stuff is just a sweet, smokey, Latakia and makes no pretense about it. It was overwhelming! One may leave the cake form, without rubbing entirely, in its tin. This was the perfect after-dinner smoke tonight. I still rate it at three stars, and worth your consideration if you're into heavy English blends. Another winner from C&D. . I smoke all kinds of English/Balkan stuff. Upon lighting, I was pleasantly surprised. 0. It's smokey alright. Very smoky, leathery, and herby. I've only been smoking pipes for about, oh, two months now. :). Those of you who enjoy latakia-forward blends are in for a real treat though, as the Orientals and burley add just enough balance to keep Pirate Kake from being a one-dimensional lat bomb. I really tried to like the taste, but not being a regular consumer of Latakia, I found that exotic leaf to be simply "over the top" in this instance. I know I like it, but I am not sure if it will always be in my stock. Highly recommend with the caveat that you like a Lat bomb. You may want to get a small amount to try it before you go bulk. I smoked a 1oz sample of this in my nicest pipe, a Jirsa bulldog. I suppose there are those who just can't get enough latakia who will like it, just as there are those who put an entire bottle of ketchup on their food. A strong Latakia tobacco is what I expected and that's exactly what I got, so no complaints. TONS of smoky spicy and an after taste that makes you think you just the bark off a whole smoked pork shoulder. In that sense, this blend would be all-day smoke for Lataki a followers. You either love Latakia or you seldom partake in it. PK has the reputation for being a Lat bomb, but it is actually a nice and smooth smoke. The latakia overwhelms the other "trace" ingredients. I smoked some the next day and I noted that it smelled similar to being in smokehouse. . Updated 8/10/12 I've just tried, Engine 99, back to back with, Pirate Kake, both bulks, and I find PK better . But I detect none. I AM somewhat surprised at this ca ke's mild, lovely flavour.. It doesn't stay lit, requires constant tamping and seems to fall out with hot embers. This blend burns slowly and is exceptionally cool. The dominant feature is the smoky Latakia. Or, at least I thought so. To start let me say that pirate kake is the first tobacco that has ever made my hands look like that of a mechanic. Try it, now. But it really is a good tasting tobacco. Pirate Kake is also the most antisocial tobacco blend Ive ever smelled. When you open this tin your instantly brought around the campfire just an awesome smokeyness! A word about the aroma, I always thought this would send people running, but the other day I was with three other guys smoking cigars when I lit some PK, they all said how great it smelled. Tastes like Karo Syrup and Latikia. NOTHING. Now, that sounds overwhelming at first, but Cornell and Diehl have managed to pull off a masterpiece. I could not cut this with my fairly substantial pocketknife, only whittle on it, just like a hunk of decking. Burns well, and tastes great. This is the closest thing I have found to Latakia heaven at a bulk price. I opened the bag and was greeted by a very rich, heavy pleasant smoky flavor that was leading this charge of flavors. You'll have to brush the taste out of your mouth. The cakes are easy to break apart and rub out nicely. A treasure you need to have in your cellar! I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. Recommend for all Enthusiasts and most all newcomers looking to expand their horizons. This offers a nice contrast to the G.L. I like Latakia, but I wouldn't consider myself one that likes it to totally dominate the blend. Forgiving when my cadence changes; a mellow carpet of Latakia on my tongue and palate without bite or sour. I prefer to not rub this one out or it will burn too fast on you. Let them try Kake and they'll abandon blends they thought were pinnacle. This is fun in so many ways. All in all I would rate this a 3.75. bomb! The hype is real. I was also surprised at the fact that I got a little bit of complexity out of this blend. Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good English blend this stuff is top notch and is cheap and available. I've had the privilege of smoking a pretty decent variety of blends for my budget. Pirate Kake is only for the true Latakia Lover, it has 70% Latakia in it , so unless your a big fan of Latakia, as I am, you may not want to buy over a sample to try. Heavy smoke. This is the most delicious of all the latakia. bomb! The rich smoky, leathery, earthy, woody, incense-like, sweet Cyprian Latakia is the star component, comprising 70% of the blend. My new favorite. I love the fact that it's such a wonderful smoke All the reviews are very complete, so I will just add my few points. With the fragrantly smoky aroma from Latakia, this easily packed crumble cake already becomes my everyday rotation. I smoked one bowl out of one of my nicer pipes and now its a latakia pipe forever because the nastiness of pirate kake will never be exorcized. I revisited me old block of Pirate Kake about a week ago, and found it had dried quite a bit more than I wanted it to. And this is the blend. It was some of the nicest Latakia I have smoked in some time. It was almost worth the price just for that. As Devil's advocate, this is the best contemporary Latakia based English I've smoked barring my ancient faves: Sullivan's 00 & XX blends from 50 years ago. But this still is a good and rough almost pure Latakia island for Pirates! The smoke is smooth and Creamy with a little roughness now and then. Tin note is great with lots of wood smoke, some pine, oriental tobacco, and slight creosote. The smoke is heavy and rich and leaves wherever you are smelling like a campfire. Delicious Smokey, leathery, earthy, woodsy, Latakia aye cant gets enough of! Even stronger in Latakia than Captain Earle's 10 Russians (also a nice, heavy-Latakia blend.) Very Piratey. It doesn't bite me any, regardless of my technique, it's just a very comfortable smoke. Some mentions aging cake differs taste, tbh, I didn't try. That is why this blend should not be compared with Dunhill EMP, or similar blends. got two tins just in time Truly a blend for Latakia aficionados. I liked it a lot but was a little harsh, naturally I jarred it up , put it away and tried other blends in my quest of tobaccos. in my cellar and check on it every few month for the mellowing I enjoyed on my 2012 earlier order. Just a great meaty smoke. I should never have waited so long to try it! Latakia itself doesn't carry much strength so if you're looking for a nicotine wallop then you won't find it here. Well I was hoping to find something very strong as it's a Latakia Bomb but NO! That being said for me even staying within the same company I think you get much more nuance and flavor while remaining a great smoke from Stimulus Package or Da Vinci maybe even Mississippi Mud if youd like black Cavendish. A favorite for special occasions, definitely not an all day smoke for me. Pirate Cake has 22% THC. I will probably update my impressions in the future. Mainly because it had to do with pirate. The turkish and burley add nothing. I'm taking to C&D's blends really fast and have yet to sample anything I have not enjoyed to the fullest. Don't know what made me think to do this but I loved it, there, in the background. So I figured I'd go down to the liquor locker and pull out the Cruzan dark Rum. There's not much to say about this one, except Latakia. Not pleasant. I have saved about a 4 oz chunk of this in a jar and smoked some this evening with some black tea. Upon cutting the bag the latakia aroma permeated the room and my nose. Yeah, I know that I am supposed to set out a bowl and let it dry overnight, butmy "compromise" was to only pack the loose crumbles that were in the bag. It's quite easy to peel off the cake layer and get it ready for smokable condition. The satisfaction this baccy gives me is immense. I find PK to be a charmingly enjoyable blend, smooth as butter, rich with wood, earth and leather, along with some sweet coupled with sea salt (and a mineral-like element that I cant quite put my finger on its not quite soda-like but it sits right behind the salt). I smoked a tin then I bought a pound. I absolutely love this stuff; it is smooth, dark, full and creamy. Love the pressed bricks that lie waiting in the can when it is opened. My tin was dated from 2015. The tin aroma is that of hay in a barn. Please keep it coming. Right up my alley as I burn wood to heat the house. Next time I mixed in a little more and then a little more and a little more and then I ran out. It has been sitting in my closet for almost exactly 6 years. If Nightcap is Wagnerian, this is a brass band. All she said was ?that smells kinda strong.? that is dense and smellsof Latakia. I really like this one. Its almost a single note experience. If you want to strip the gears of a non-smoker, well folks this Latakia packed blend will get the job done. After discovery, I probably only got about three bowls out of this. Smoke this slowly. To my suprise the unburnt aroma is quite sweet, nutty and not overly Latakia-ish. For the Latakia lover who doesn?t care about anything else in the blend, this is probably the blend to get. I find this to be quite comparable to Penzance. no joke. This was my staple tobacco for a number of years. Be prepared to be shunned! The smokey latakia is up front (though I wouldn't consider it a lat bomb), and floral riding shot gun and mildly sweet in the back. It is true to its word, but C&D could tinker the blend and do better. Apparently, it's recommended to try mixing this with some Haunted Bookshop, however I have not tried that yet. It has a cake cut. Absolute yummy. I'm still not a fan of the Krumble Kake as stated above, but it does burn at a sip. Tobacco. I was expecting a one-dimensional experience, but I assure you there is more to this tobacco than many give it credit for. Popped and greeted with the unmistakable aroma of a lot of Latakia. Although BLB is wonderful in its own right, I have to say that this blend takes the cake. If you're a latakia fiend, you have to try this. It's really not what I consider a "Latakia Bomb" with an obtrusive Latakia aroma! fix this is a great place to go. There are background notes of dried fruits present, however, if you let your nose acclimate. I can't get enough of the really robust and smokey aroma, the delicious full leathery, peaty taste. Room note? It may get my additional half star again with aging. The cake is loose and breaks into a ribbon cut easy for packing. The single clarion note LATAKIA is all you get. I don't smoke pirate kake very often but a few times a month I do get a CRAVING for it, and it always delivers. A cigarette is to be smoked. I'm a Virginia flake and "Balkan" guy and these are now put back into the cellar!!! tin provides four bricks of crumbly, rich black tobacco with a few random flakes of lighter orientals here and there.
